Following the announcement of the South African Film & Television Awards 2015  (SAFTAs) nominee list, Dark Matter Studios is very proud to announce that 2014 feature film ‘Leading Lady’ has been nominated in the following three categories:

 

Best Achievement in Original Score - Benjamin Willem
Best Achievement in Sound - Jim Petrak
Best Supporting Actress - Mary Twala (as Sarah)

 

This superb news is greatly welcomed by cast and crew of Leading Lady, and all involved in the outstanding film.

In international news, Henk Pretorius, director of Leading Lady, is currently attending the Sedona International Film Festival in Arizona as Leading Lady has been selected as one of the international films to be screened. This is Leading Lady’s second American film festival, having attended the Seattle International Film Festival in 2014 prior to theatrical release of the movie, which bodes very well for the film and the exposure being gained in internationally.

South African director/producer team, Henk Pretorius and Llewelynn Greeff, bring Hollywood home in Leading Lady – a cross-continental love story where ”fame meets farm” and life means more than just Hollywood’s “lights, camera, action…!”

 

Leading Lady was released nationwide on the local cinema circuit at the end of November 2014 and earned R8 million at the box office. And now, you can enjoy Leading Lady from the comfort of your own home. The DVD is being released on the 14th of February 2015 – an absolute, must-own DVD to add to your collection! Local talents, Brümilda van Rensburg and Bok van Blerk, rub shoulders with international Irish actress, Katie McGrath (Jurassic World, Dracula) and Gil Bellows (Ally McBeal, Shawshank Redemption) in this love story about a British drama-school teacher and aspiring actress, Jodi Rutherford (McGrath), who persuades South African farmer, Kobus Willemse (Van Blerk) from Brandfort in

the Free State to prepare her for a role in a major film as an Afrikaans war heroine. In return, Jodi undertakes to organise and direct the annual concert on the Willemse farm.  It has been an exciting, whirlwind journey for the Leading Lady team. 

 

On top of a successful run on home ground, there have been many memorable moments that are worth mentioning.

 

Leading Lady received wide acclaim at the film’s world première at the Seattle International Film Festival in June 2014. And proudly flying the South African flag there were Pretorius and Greeff, alongside Matthew Mole, whose music is featured in the film and who was invited to perform at the festival.

 

The build-up in the weeks before the official release was filled with excitement, especially during the visit by veteran Hollywood actor, Gil Bellows (who plays the role of Daniel Taylor), to assist in promoting the film.

 

Three weeks before the release, Pretorius and Greeff received word that the film had secured a summer 2015 release in the USA, which is a feat not so easily achievable all the way from South Africa.

 

The single, Soutwater, sung by Bok van Blerk, also reached #1 on the Jacaranda FM charts.

 

The DVD is distributed by SterKinekor Entertainment and will be available at leading retailers nationwide.

AMERICA’S GOT TALENT A&R IN SOUTH AFRICA!

 

Nate Butler is the current A&R for The X Factor (U.S. season 3) and America's Got Talent. In addition to this, he is an established songwriter, music producer, vocal producer, and recording artist. He is based in Atlanta, Georgia and he has been actively involved in the producing and writing of over 45 million records, which have been sold worldwide. In March 2015 Nate and his team will be traveling to South Africa in order to record the first track on his new album with South African artist, Anais. The track is titled Dance Like David.

 

Anais and Nate Butler originally performed Dance Like David at the International Talent Showcase at Monte Casino, which took place on the 17th and 18th of October 2014. The track was well-received and the show was a huge success. It was featured on television, in magazines, and on online newsstands across South Africa. Nate has wanted to record Dance Like David for quite some time now, but he had made no effort to do so as he had not found the right person yet. This was until he shared the stage at Monte Casino with Anais. It is an honour that Nate has chosen a South African Artist to record with, considering that he is the A&R for America’s Got Talent and an established artist in the United Sates. This collaboration is to be a turning point for the South African entertainment industry and it is to make international news.

 

This collaboration, in association with Just You and Be Your Dream, is to be the first of its kind in South Africa. The track will be recorded in March 2015 in South Africa. By recording Dance Like David together, Anais and Nate will aim to merge American and South African talent in order to produce a track that is of a world class quality. This collaboration will take the South African music industry to a new level and assist in forming bonds and solid relationships across borders.

 

Nate will also be offering a workshop on Tuesday the 3^rd of March for Tsogo Sun’s Arts Academy. The Tsogo Sun Arts Academy aims to develop the artistic talents of learners who come from underprivileged backgrounds. The program aims to provide these learners with essential life skills that they can develop and evolve into a sustainable career. The program makes use of the Teatro at Monte Casino and the Gold Reef City Lyric Theatre in order to showcase and develop the talent of these young individuals. Nate’s workshop will form a part of Tsogo Sun’s Corporate Social Investment Programme. Although the workshop is intended for the Arts Academy, it is free and open to anyone who wishes to attend. During the workshop Nate and Anais will share valuable advice on how to succeed in the entertainment industry at an international level. By using their extensive experience as a platform, Nate and Anais will advise young performers on methods and procedures to follow if they wish to embark on the road towards success.  The workshop will be held at Silverstar Casino and will start at 15h00.  Registration upon arrival.

 

As LifeLine’s National Ambassador, this project and collaboration with Nate is important to Anais. Not only will it merge the South African entertainment industry with that of the states, but it will also provide fellow South African performers with valuable information on how to succeed at an international level, thereby assisting them in achieving their dreams.

SOUTH AFRICAN RECORDING ARTIST WOUTER KELLERMAN WINS GRAMMY® AWARD


Globe-trotting South African flautist and composer Wouter Kellerman has won a Grammy® Award in the category ‘Best New Age Album” for ‘Winds Of Samsara, a collaboration with composer and music producer Ricky Kej.


Kellerman joins a list of great Grammy® award-winning South African artists including Miriam Makeba and Ladysmith Black Mambazo.


Kellerman has proved to be one of South Africa’s foremost musicians since launching his debut album ‘Colour’ in 2008. In 2010 he performed at the FIFA World Cup Closing Ceremony to a global television audience of 700-million people, and in 2011 he won the South African equivalent of the Grammy (the SAMA or South African Music Award) for his album ‘Two Voices’.




                                                                                                            ‘Winds Of Samsara’ was also nominated for two HMMA (Hollywood In Media Awards) in the World Music and New Age categories, debuted at Number 1 on the US New Age Billboard charts (spending 11 weeks in the Top 10) and topped the Radio Airplay Charts in the month of July 2014.

Met treffer liedjies soos “Gooi jou arms om my”, “Vir Jou” en “Hoe wys ‘n man sy hart” het Vaughan Gardiner homself reeds lankal as gevestigde musikant, liedjieskrywer, sanger, akteur en vervaardiger bewys.
Dit is met groot opgewondenheid dat die tweede enkelsnit, Sit vanaand op herhaal, vanaf sy splinternuwe album wat gedurende April 2015 uitgereik sal word nou uitgereik word.  Aanghangers wag al lank vir nog ‘n Vaughan Gardiner treffer en hy gaan beslis niemand teleurstel nie!
Die liedjie vertel die storie van daardie een perfekte aand wat ‘n mens eenmaal in ‘n leeftyd beleef. Met sy voete-jeuk ritme wat perfek is vir die dansbaan, vertel die enkelsnit van ‘n aand waar ‘n man sy hart verloor op ‘n meisie wie skielik elke liefdeslied se woorde laat sin maak, en al wat hy wens is dat hierdie aand, wat soos ‘n fliek verloop het, net herhaal moet word.
Vaughan is in 1987 in Johannesburg gebore, maar bring die meeste van sy kinderjare in die Kaap deur.  Sy liefde vir musiek het op 'n jong ouderdom ontluik en hom aangespoor om elektriese- en akoestiese kitaar en klavier te leer speel.  Op 16-jarige ouderdom slaan Vaughan sy eerste teaterrol los in Oedipus the Tyrant.  In dieselfde jaar sien Mozi Records hom raak en ses jaar later, nadat hy 'n B.Rek-graad aan die Universiteit van Stellenbosch verwerf het, begin hy saam met Sean Else en Johan Vorster werk aan sy eerste album.  In 2009 word sy debuutalbum Wie Ek Is, vrygestel.




Hy begin ook vir ander kunstenaars (onder andere Izak Davel, Riaan Grobler, Bok van Blerk, Liani May, Jannie Moolman, Kayla, David Fourie) musiek vervaardig, liedjies skryf en kitaar speel.  Vaughan word in 2009 vir 'n Huisgenoot Tempo- en Vonk-toekenning genomineer, hy word gekies as een van Vaal Hit Radio Station se top tien kunstenaars van 2009 en die liedjie Ver van Jou behaal die 6de plek op Radio Rippel se treffersparade.  In 2010 ontvang hy die MK Toekenning vir Beste Solo Kunstenaar - 'n toekenning waarvoor hy weer in 2011 genomineer word.  In 2010 slaag hy 'n oudisie vir die hoofrol in die musiekblyspel Jock of the Bushveld.  Vir sy vertolking van Jock ontvang hy 'n Naledi Theatre Award-nominasie. In 2011 speel Vaughan ‘n hoofrol in Deon Opperman se musiekblyspel “Tree Aan!: Die Grensoorlog musiekblyspel”.  In November 2011 vertolk Vaughan 'n hoofrol in die musiekfliek, Platteland waarvoor hy ook die temalied, gesing deur Steve Hofmyer en Bok van Blerk, geskryf het.  Vaughan was ook in kykNET se dramareeks Hartland te sien as Gerhard Naude. In 2012 is Vaughan te sien in die musiekblyspel Lied van my hart, hy komponeer ook die temalied vir hierdie musiekblyspel. In dieselfde jaar maak Vaughan sy verskyning in die treffer kykNet reeks Getroud met Rugby.
Vaughan spog ook as liedjieskrywer met liedere vir o.a Steve Hofmyer, Bok van Blerk, Lianie May, Karlien van Jaarsveld, Nicholis Louw, Kurt Darren, Elizma Theron, Nàdine, Kayla,
Andriette Norman, David Fourie, Izak Davel, Riaan Grobler, Dirk van der Westhuizen, Karen Ferreira en Willem Botha. In 2013 is Vaughan die musiek vervaardiger en musiek regisseur vir die tienerreeks Liefste Kayla. Ook in 2013, vertolk hy die rol van Koos Kombuis in die die teaterstuk, Kytie – ‘n Koos Kombuis Storie. Sy 2de solo album Hoe wys ‘n man sy hart is in September 2012 vrygestel.
 Sy nuutste album sal in April 2015 uitgereik word en sluit in treffers soos “Jou hart klop in my ritme”, “Sit vanaand op herhaal” en ‘n paar heerlike verrassings.
Vaughan het ook onlangs sy nagraads in intellektuele goedere reg aan die Universiteit van Stellenbosch met Cum Laude voltooi. Hy bly tans in Johannesburg waar hy ook deel is van die Muse Productions span saam met Hugo Ludik van die groep ADAM.

BEKENDES LAAT BALLADE VIR ‘N ENKELING-TREFFERS HERLEEF

Vanaf 20 Maart 2015 kan Suid-Afrikaners weer die nostalgie agter Ballade vir ’n Enkeling herleef nes in die jare tagtig - dié keer op die grootskerm met ’n nuwe en vars benadering tot hierdie legendariese storie.
Bekende Suid-Afrikaanse akteurs soos Donnalee Roberts, Rolanda Marais, Armand Aucamp en Jacques Bessenger, asook nuwelinge Christia Visser, Edwin van Jaarsveld, Luan Jacobs, Miles Petzer en ander het saam met The Film Factory se gesoute filmspan ‘n nuwe baadjie vir die ikoniese TV-reeks aangetrek.  
Hierdie treffer-reeks, wat in 1987 kykrekords laat spat het, se storie word nou weer vertel – dié slag onder leiding van die knap jong regisseur, Quentin Krog.
Krog was reeds betrokke by baie van Suid-Afrika se voorste film-, televisie- en teater-projekte. Sy onlangse optredes as rolprentakteur sluit in Blitzpatrollie, asook kykNET se dramareekse Donkerland, Vloeksteen en Boland Moorde, asook Swartwater (SABC) en die kykNET-kortfilm Buurtwag. Sy mees onlangse reeks as regisseur was die TV-reeks Sterlopers.
Ballade vir ‘n Enkeling word ook onthou vir die treffertemas Voshaarnooi, geskryf deur Louis van Rensburg en Ballade vir ‘n Enkeling, geskryf deur Richard van der Westhuizen.  Louis en Richard het ook saam gewerk aan die klankbaan vir hierdie reeks wat goue status bereik het.

Nou, in 2015,word hierdie treffers in ‘n nuwe gedaante aangebied deur Joshua na die Reën en Die Heuwels Fantasties.  Joshua na die Reën, met sy vars en unieke klank, is verantwoordelik vir ‘n nuwe weergawe vanVoshaarnooi;terwyl Die Heuwels Fantasties hul eie klank aan Ballade vir ‘n Enkeling gee.Voshaarnooi se enkelsnit tref radiostasies op 29 Januarie 2015 en sal gevolg word deur die uitreiking van die musiekvideo eksklusief op Jukebox kykNET 146 op 21 Februarie 2015.  Ballade vir ‘n Enkeling se enkelsnit word ook gedurende Februarie 2015 uitgereik met die opvolg-video wat vroeg in Maart gewys sal word.

Ballade vir ’n Enkeling is ‘n romantiese speurverhaal en sal die nostalgie uit die tagtigerjare weer opnuut laat opvlam, maar gaan dié keer ook ‘n nuwe geslag betrek. Die geheimsinnigheid, gekoppel aan die liefdesverhaal, sal elkeen wat daarna kyk van voor af betower. Niemand sal onaangeraak hier uitstap nie.
Die storie en die draaiboek is geskryf deur Leon van Nierop en is vervaardig deur Danie Bester van The Film Factory met die bekroonde kinematograaf Tom Marais agter die kamera.
Die roman, wat ook deur Leon van Nierop geskryf is en deur Tafelberg Uitgewers uitgegee is, is reeds vanaf Augustus 2014 op die rakke.
Ballade vir ‘n Enkeling word plaaslik op 20 Maart 2015 op die groot skerm uitgereik.  Ster Kinekor Entertainment is die verspreiders.
